The Effect of Counseling on Knowledge about Personal Hygiene During Menstruation at SMPN 1 Mlati Sleman Yogyakarta

Abstract
Menstrual personal hygiene is an effort to improve health through the implementation of hygiene measures that can be carried out to maintain individual cleanliness and health during the menstrual period. This is intended so that women gain physical and psychological well-being and can improve their health status during menstruation. Knowledge about personal hygiene is very important to improve health and prevent disease. The impact of a lack of knowledge about personal menstrual hygiene allows teenagers to not behave in hygienic ways, which results in reproductive health hazards and the emergence of diseases in the reproductive tract. This research aims to determine the effect of counseling on knowledge about personal hygiene during menstruation at SMPN (State Junior High School) 1 Mlati Sleman Yogyakarta. This type of research is pre-experiment research with the "one group pretest-posttest design" model. The sample for this research was 53 class VII female students taken from the entire population using total sampling technique. This research uses a questionnaire as an instrument and then the results are analyzed using the bivariate analysis method (Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test). The results showed that 23 female students (43.4%) did not know enough about personal hygiene during menstruation before receiving counseling, 18 students (34%) knew enough, and 12 female students (22.6%) knew well. After receiving counseling, their knowledge increased, 30 female students (56.6%) knew quite well, 19 female students (35.9%) knew well, and 4 female students (7.5%) did not know much about this matter. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test statistical test obtained a p-value of 0.000 or <0.05, which means there was an influence of counseling on knowledge about personal hygiene during menstruation at SMPN 1 Mlati Sleman Yogyakarta. Based on the results of this research, we hope that schools can provide reproductive health education facilities for adolescents, especially regarding personal hygiene during menstruation, through existing counseling guidance.
