The Role of Nurses’ Critical Thinking in Developing Effective Nursing Care
Main Article Content
Abstract
Critical thinking is an important skill that nurses must possess in order to develop effective nursing care that is oriented toward patient needs. This ability enables nurses to analyze patient data comprehensively, identify health problems accurately, plan appropriate interventions, and evaluate nursing outcomes systematically and continuously. In practice, critical thinking supports rational and evidence-based decision-making processes, thereby improving the quality of care and patient safety. This article aims to examine the relationship between nurses' critical thinking skills and the effectiveness of nursing care through a narrative literature review approach. The literature search was conducted systematically through the Google Scholar, PubMed, and Semantic Scholar databases between 2015 and 2025, with articles selected based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, using the PRISMA diagram as an identification tool. The results indicate that critical thinking skills have a significant impact on the quality of nursing documentation, caring behavior, patient safety, team collaboration, and the overall effectiveness of the nursing process. Factors such as intrinsic motivation, work fatigue, monotonous routines, and an unsupportive work environment also influence nurses' critical thinking skills. Therefore, the development of critical thinking skills needs to be focused on through continuous training, effective clinical supervision, and increased reflective awareness in daily practice. These efforts are expected to improve the quality of nursing care and create more professional and responsive healthcare services that meet patient needs. Improvements in critical thinking skills can also be achieved through continuing education and varied practical experience. In this way, nurses will be better prepared to handle complex clinical challenges, make timely decisions, and ultimately provide the best possible nursing care for the overall well-being of patients.
