Abstract

Adolescence is a period of transition from child to adult where there will be rapid growth and development physically and mentally. Menstruation is a natural process that starts with the discharge of the endometrial lining and is accompanied by bleeding that occurs at certain periods and consistently. The menstrual cycle is controlled by several hormone interactions that occur due to hormonal imbalances, causing disturbances in women before their period is called premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In Indonesia, as many as 40% of women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and as many as 2-10% of women experience severe symptoms. The purpose of this study was to describe the level of knowledge of young women about premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This study used descriptive quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. This research data collection method using a questionnaire. The population in this study were all 45 students in class VII and VIII of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Mlati Sleman, with a total sample of 39 students. Data analysis used univariate analysis with the aim of describing the level of knowledge about premenstrual syndrome (PMS), namely good, sufficient or insufficient. The results of this study indicate that the knowledge of young women at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Mlati about premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is in the moderate category (74.4%), the definition of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is in the poor category (51.3%), the etiology of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is in the good category ( 61.5%), Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms are sufficient (56.4%), Handling premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is lacking (66.7%), Risk factors are lacking (64.1%). The conclusions and suggestions in this study are that the majority of respondents with a sufficient level of knowledge (74.4%), it is hoped that female students can increase their knowledge and understanding of reproductive health, especially about premenstrual syndrome (PMS) so that they can deal with the symptoms that are felt before menstruation.
