The Effectiveness of Health Education Through Audio Visual on Self-Breast Examination Knowledge in Female Adolescents in Youth Organization of Karangsono Village

Abstract

Breast cancer is the largest number of cancer case in Indonesia. The problem is due to the lack of female awareness to perform self-breast examination, the low level of knowledge, and patients’ late stage of examination in which they come to do examination after chronic stage. The objective of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of health education using audio visual on female adolescents’ self-breast examination knowledge in female adolescents in youth organization of Karangsono village. Quasi experiment with pretest and post test with control group design was used in the study. The samples were taken by using total sampling in which 52 samples were divided into 2 groups using systematic sampling technique. Each group namely audio visual and preaching group consisted of 26 respondents. The data were collected using questionnaire. The data collection methods were Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney statistical test. Wilcoxon test result in treatment group and control group showed p value 0.000 < (0.05). It revealed that there was a significant difference about knowledge before and after health education. Mann-Whitney test result obtained p value 0.000 < (0.05) indicating that audio visual media was more effective in improving knowledge compared with preaching method. Health education method selection is very crucial because the chosen method becomes one of success factors in health education.
