Reducing Nausea Vomiting Using Foot Massage in Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy
Main Article Content
Abstract
Chemotherapy is a type of systemic cancer therapy that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells. Common side effects of chemotherapy are nausea and vomiting, due to the cytotoxic nature of chemotherapy drugs. Quality of life can be impaired if nausea and vomiting persist for a long time. Foot massage is one non-pharmacological method for managing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. The aims of this case study is to demonstrate that foot massage can reduce nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The method of this case study is descriptive with nursing care approach that applied to three subjects who met the inclusion criteria: cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, aged 21 to 55, male, conscious, and able to communicate. The instrument used was the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (RINVR) scale. RINVR scores were assessed five times: pre-chemotherapy before the foot massage intervention, pre-chemotherapy after the foot massage intervention, post-chemotherapy before the foot massage, post-chemotherapy after the foot massage intervention, and 48 hours after chemotherapy. The Swedish-style foot massage began with effleurage (gentle touch) techniques, followed by petrissage (muscle kneading), and concluded with effleurage (gentle touch). The foot massage was given in two sessions: 20 minutes before the start of chemotherapy and immediately after the completion of chemotherapy. Each session lasted 20 minutes (10 minutes for each foot). The study results showed that all subjects experienced a reduction in nausea and vomiting after the foot massage intervention. Subject 1's Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (NVR) score decreased from 9 to 3, subject 2's NVR score decreased from 10 to 3, and subject 3's NVR score decreased from 7 to 0. Foot massage has been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting in cancer patients after chemotherapy. This foot massage is easy to apply independently, safe, and effective in reducing nausea and vomiting. Foot massage can be used as an alternative, complementary, or non-pharmacological treatment that can reduce nausea and vomiting.
