Characteristics of Age and Impact on Quality of Life of Students with Acne Vulgaris

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is a disease in the form of inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles which usually occurs in adolescents. The impact on their quality of life can be significant. The main objective of this study was to determine the age characteristics of respondents with acne vulgaris, its severity and its impact on the quality of life of State Senior High School 1 Klego Boyolali students, Central Java. This study used an observational analytic approach with a cross sectional study. Medical students trained in dermatology examined a representative sample of high school students aged 13 to 18 years to identify acne vulgaris. The students' quality of life was assessed using the Cardiff Acne Disability Index. Demographic data, characteristics of acne vulgaris and quality of life of students were reported. The sampling technique in this study was consecutive sampling. Data processing used univariate analysis and bivariate chi-square analysis. A total of 62 students aged 13 to 18 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were used as respondents in this study. The highest prevalence was mild acne as many as 29 students (43.3%), moderate acne as many as 28 students (41.8%) and severe acne as many as 10 students (14.9%). Hypothesis testing using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level obtained a p-value of 0.0001 which is smaller than the significance = 0.05. Conclusion: Acne vulgaris has an impact on the quality of life of students of State High School 1 Klego Boyolali, Central Java. In this study, there is a relationship between acne vulgaris and the quality of life of students at SMA N 1 Klego, Boyolali Regency, Central Java.
