The Effect of Premarital Education Using Video Media on Engaged Couples’ Knowledge and Motivation for Pregnancy Preparation to Prevent Stunting

Abstract

Stunting remains a nutritional problem that can begin before conception and is therefore relevant to premarital and preconception education. The present study aimed to determine the effect of premarital education using video media on engaged couples’ knowledge and motivation regarding pregnancy preparation to prevent stunting in the Pelaihari KUA area. This quantitative study used a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted at the Pelaihari KUA area in February 2026. Respondents were engaged couples meeting the inclusion criteria, and the analysis was based on 22 complete respondent records. Data were collected using a 25-item knowledge questionnaire and a 15-item Likert motivation questionnaire. Univariate analysis was used to describe respondent characteristics and the distribution of knowledge and motivation. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to assess data distribution, followed by the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test for paired pretest-posttest comparisons. Before the intervention, knowledge was categorized as low in 9 respondents (40.9%), moderate in 11 (50.0%), and good in 2 (9.1%). After video education, all respondents (100%) were in the good knowledge category. Motivation before the intervention was low in 3 respondents (13.6%) and moderate in 19 (86.4%); after the intervention, 13 respondents (59.1%) had moderate motivation and 9 (40.9%) had good motivation. The Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in knowledge (Z=-4.119; p<0.001) and motivation (Z=-4.115; p<0.001). These findings indicate that premarital education using video media was associated with significant improvements in knowledge and motivation for pregnancy preparation among engaged couples in the study setting. Video media may therefore be considered as one educational medium within premarital guidance programs, while longer-term evaluation is still needed.
