The Relationship between Self-Confidence Levels with Interpersonal Communication Skills in Students

Abstract
Interpersonal communication capabilities are a thing that must be mastered by the nursing student to provide effective nursing care. One of the factors which can increase or decrease interpersonal communication capabilities is self-confidence level. The phenomenon in the St. Vincentius A Paulo Catholic School of Health Science was many bachelor students can’t use interpersonal communication because they feel ashamed or they feel unable to use interpersonal communication. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between the level of self-confidence and the interpersonal communication capabilities. The design of this research was a correlation study with a cross-sectional time approach. The population was 58 respondents in the first and second years of nursing bachelor student. Simple stratified random sampling was applied for data collection. The level of self confidence was assessed by Personal Evaluation Inventory (PEI) questionnaire and the interpersonal communication capabilities was assessed by Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (ICCS) questionnaire. Using Statistical analysis of ASDPP, the result of the study showed that the most of respondents (72%) have a moderate level of self-confidence and (83%) of respondents have a moderate level of interpersonal communication capabilities. The relationship between the level of self-confidence and the interpersonal communication capabilities was assessed by Spearman Rank Correlation Study with p-value = 0,012, and rvalue +0,326. The result of the study showed a low relationship and positive direction, which means higher level of self-confidence can improve the level of interpersonal communication capabilities. Therefore, the result of this study can be a suggestion for academic activities to increase the level of student self-confidence and furthermore to increase the level of interpersonal communication capabilities.
